Abstract
The article explores the representation of economies and the interconnections between credit, debts and charity in Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice." It details the connections of the gentry and wealthy merchants to trade. It discusses the economic crisis created by the elopement of the character Lydia for the Bennet family, as well as the benefits that merchants bring to society, and the merchant as personification of self-interest, international benevolence and civic responsibility.
