Abstract
This article examines the concept of time in education, critiquing the dominant neoliberal capitalist view that frames time primarily as a resource for labor and capital accumulation. Drawing on Martin Hägglund’s notion of finitude and Emmanuel Levinas’ ethics of time as a relational gift, it proposes alternative understandings that emphasize social responsibility, relationality, and freedom rather than competition and economic productivity. The paper argues that reorienting educational time away from capitalist imperatives toward ethical engagement with others can transform curriculum, pedagogy, and educational goals, fostering a more meaningful and equitable approach to learning. This perspective challenges prevailing economic rationales in education and invites a reconsideration of how time is valued and spent within schooling.
