Abstract

The article focuses on the challenges and evolving nature of pastoral care within the Kirk, highlighting a crisis marked by declining youth involvement and the heavy demands on ministers. Traditionally, pastoral care was the responsibility of ministers and elders, but with aging leadership and uneven pastoral gifts, some Kirk Sessions have formed pastoral care groups involving congregation members with relevant skills. Drawing on biblical and historical perspectives, including the metaphor of the Good Shepherd and the example of shepherding in James Rebanks' biography, the article emphasizes the importance of rootedness, commitment, and shared responsibility in pastoral ministry. It concludes that effective pastoral care requires resilience, intimacy, and inclusivity, reflecting the shepherd's role in guiding and sustaining the community.
