Abstract
A literary criticism of the book "A Tale of Two Cities" and "Great Expectations "by Charles Dickens is presented. It outlines the politically significant landscape motifs and the portrayal of class-consciousness. It examines the role of the marshes in "Great Expectations" as a symbol of Pip's state of being and the uncertain foundations of Victorian England, questioning the conditions enabling the country's prosperity and the reliance on the colonial "Other."
