Abstract

This article examines the effectiveness of retention bonuses—cash incentives offered to employees to encourage them to stay through a specified date or milestone. While retention bonuses are widely used, especially for key roles during mergers, acquisitions, or competitive talent markets, evidence suggests they do not foster long-term loyalty or engagement and may even encourage employees to leave once the bonus period ends. Experts recommend using retention bonuses strategically, with clear eligibility criteria, written agreements, and transparent communication to avoid issues of fairness and morale. Ultimately, retention bonuses are best viewed as short-term tools, with lasting employee retention relying more on strong managerial relationships and nonmonetary incentives.
