Abstract

A recent study conducted at the University of Texas Austin explores the mental health effects of the Superwoman Schema (SWS) on Black women. The SWS is a construct that captures the collective response of Black women to racial and gender marginalization, emphasizing expectations of strength, emotional suppression, and self-neglect. The study found that dimensions of the SWS, such as emotion suppression and obligation to help others, were associated with elevated depressive symptoms. Additionally, the study revealed that financial strain and net worth, rather than traditional measures of socioeconomic status, moderated the association between SWS endorsement and depressive symptoms. The implications of these findings and future research directions are discussed. [Extracted from the article]
