Abstract

This article reviews a recording of three vocal works by British composer Alec Roth, each setting English-language poetry that explores themes of nature and human connection. The centerpiece, *A Road Less Travelled*, is a solo cantata for tenor and guitar based on 15 poems by Edward Thomas, reflecting on roads, nature, and the shadow of war. The other two cycles include *The Garden Path*, featuring mezzo-soprano and string quartet with texts by Amy Lowell inspired by her garden, and *Other Earths and Skies*, a tenor and oboe cycle using Chinese poems by Li Bai translated by Vikram Seth. The performances by Mark Padmore, Hugo Hymas, Martha McLorinan, and accompanying musicians are noted for clarity, sensitivity, and expressive nuance, supported by high-quality recording.
