Abstract

The article is a review of Carina Rasse's book "Poetic Metaphors: Creativity and Interpretation." The book explores the cognitive nature of metaphor in poetry, focusing on the gap between a poet's intention and a reader's understanding. Rasse conducts a comparative analysis of the intended meaning of six modern poems, as extracted from interviews with the poets, and the readers' understanding of these poems, obtained from written think aloud protocols. The book's findings shed light on the unconsciousness and unpredictability of poetic figurativeness, as well as the metaphorical nature of readers' responses to poetry. [Extracted from the article]
