Abstract

This essay provides a comparative analysis of James Baldwin's 1974 novel *If Beale Street Could Talk* and Barry Jenkins' 2018 film adaptation, focusing on their portrayals of racial injustice and the concept of heterotopias as spaces for Black agency. While Jenkins' film closely follows Baldwin's depiction of systemic racism, particularly through the street and prison as sites of both oppression and resistance, it diverges notably by emphasizing Black romantic heterosexual love and patriarchal family structures, thereby downplaying Baldwin's critiques of fundamentalist religion, family solidarity, and gender equality. The film omits key religious themes and the novel's exploration of Black male vulnerability, including Frank's suicide, which weakens Baldwin's warnings about hypocritical religiosity and its impact on Black families. Despite these differences, both works serve as autonomous artistic reflections on racial injustice, with the film broadening Baldwin's reach to new audiences while altering some of the novel's complex social and political messages.
