Abstract

This review focuses on *Chronicle of the Left Hand: An American Black Family's Story from Slavery to Russia's Hollywood* by James Lloydovich Patterson, which combines autobiography and history to trace the experiences of Patterson's family across three generations. Central to the volume is the English translation of Patterson's grandmother Margaret Glasgoe's Soviet-produced autobiography, detailing her life from the post-Emancipation South through her engagement with labor organizing, Communism, and migration to the Soviet Union. The book includes Patterson's reflective notes, a scholarly article on Patterson's life and identity, and family photographs, offering valuable insights into African American migration, labor, race, and gender intersections, as well as the lesser-known history of African Americans in the Soviet Union. It serves as a primary source for researchers interested in African American and Soviet histories, while also conveying a personal narrative of family legacy and cultural identity.
