Abstract
The article explores the controversial legacy of Henry Morgan, a Welsh privateer active in the Caribbean during the late 17th century, who is viewed variably as a bloodthirsty pirate or a heroic governor of Jamaica. Born around 1635, Morgan's early life is largely unknown, but he likely arrived in the Caribbean during the Anglo-Spanish War. He gained notoriety for his raids on Spanish settlements, particularly during his infamous attack on Panama in 1671, which ultimately ended his privateering career. Following his return to England, he was celebrated as a national hero and later became the deputy governor of Jamaica, where he shifted his stance on piracy. Morgan's legacy remains contentious, with interpretations of his actions ranging from valorous to villainous, and he is also known today as the namesake of a popular spiced rum brand.
