Abstract
The article focuses on the relationship between Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick and the laying of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable in the summer of 1858. It argues that Melville's novel participates in the excitement of the burgeoning communications revolution of the time and engages with contemporary scientific conversations. It also discusses the early Victorian period's technological progress, which transformed communications and transport infrastructure.
