Abstract

The article critically examines Tate's exhibition "The Rossettis: Radical Romantics," which aims to present the Rossetti family as radical figures beyond familiar biographical narratives. It highlights the exhibition’s limited engagement with lesser-known family members like William Michael and Maria Francesca Rossetti, and the underrepresentation of Elizabeth Eleanor Siddall’s artistic work beyond her role as Gabriel Rossetti’s partner. The review notes an overreliance on facsimiles and reproductions, a lack of deeper political or feminist contextualization, and missed opportunities to explore queer, racial, and feminist perspectives. Ultimately, the exhibition is seen as falling short of its radical ambitions, focusing largely on Gabriel Rossetti’s art and failing to provide new insights into the broader Rossetti family or their purported radicalism.
