Abstract
The article focuses on the importance of accurate and inclusive autism representation in children’s literature to combat stigma and improve understanding from an early age. It highlights the widespread lack of education about autism, a neurodivergence affecting about one in 36 people, within educational systems and social justice curricula. The author emphasizes selecting books that explicitly identify autistic characters, avoid harmful stereotypes such as the “autistic savant” myth, and portray well-rounded individuals rather than defining characters solely by their neurodivergence.
