Abstract
The article focuses on the unveiling of the first Irish state memorial at Andersonville National Historic Site in Georgia, commemorating the Irish who died in the American Civil War prisoner-of-war camp known as Andersonville or Camp Sumter. The Andersonville Irish Project, launched in 2020, has identified over 900 Irishmen who perished there and maintains a database and interactive map documenting their lives and service. The project highlights the diverse origins and religious backgrounds of the Irish victims from all 32 counties, as well as the disproportionate impact on older men. The memorial, funded jointly by the Irish government and the Northern Ireland Bureau, features inscriptions in English, Irish, and Ulster-Scots, reflecting the inclusive nature of the remembrance.
