Abstract

This article focuses on the Bristol Merlin fragments, a set of seven medieval manuscript pieces identified in 2019, and presents an interdisciplinary scholarly edition that combines palaeographic, codicological, historical, and linguistic analyses. The editors date the fragments to circa 1250–1275, likely originating from northern France, and trace their later use as recycled materials in bookbindings of late-fifteenth- to early-sixteenth-century volumes of Jean Gerson's works, possibly linked to Oxford or Cambridge binders. The provenance chapter explores speculative routes by which the fragments may have traveled to Bristol Central Library, highlighting the challenges of reconstructing manuscript histories. The edition offers a clear presentation of the Old French text alongside a literal translation designed as a research tool, supplemented by detailed visual documentation and critical commentary that acknowledges both the potential and limitations of current knowledge.
