Abstract

The article focuses on Herbert Eugene Bolton, the father of Borderland Studies, which was seen primarily as an alternative approach and indeed a challenge to Frederick Jackson Turner's "Frontier Thesis". It mentions existence and importance of contact zones between competing empires, nation states, religions, peoples, languages and cultures. It also mentions Bolton rejected the notion that American history and democracy.
