Abstract

This article analyzes the rise of religious fundamentalism in Latin America and proposes reclaiming Liberation Ecumenism—a collaboration between Christian churches and social movements—as a key strategy to resist this trend. It traces how fundamentalism has been used as a neocolonial tool aligned with neoliberal and right-wing agendas, undermining democratic institutions and social rights, while Liberation Ecumenism historically supported struggles against dictatorships and social injustice through grassroots biblical interpretation and community organizing. The article highlights the Abya Yala Articulation, a transnational alliance of popular and ecumenical groups from countries including Brazil, Cuba, and Argentina, which seeks to deepen theoretical understanding of fundamentalism, coordinate collective actions, and revitalize ecumenical solidarity across the region. Through a series of meetings in 2022, this movement fosters dialogue and strategy-building to confront fundamentalism's political, social, and cultural impacts, emphasizing internationalism, decolonial thought, and spirituality as central to its approach.
