Abstract

The article examines the legacy of Robert Louis Stevenson's *Treasure Island* through its numerous prequels, sequels, and retellings over the past century. Despite initial neglect by scholars, *Treasure Island* has remained continuously in print and has inspired at least thirty-three adaptations across various media. The study highlights how these derivative works reflect changing cultural attitudes towards themes such as race, gender, and piracy, evolving from children's adventure stories to more complex narratives that critique the original text and its historical context. The article also notes a significant shift in the portrayal of characters, particularly Long John Silver, who is increasingly depicted as a sympathetic figure, and discusses the implications of these adaptations for understanding contemporary values and literary traditions.
