Abstract
The article revisits the life and work of English poet Philip Larkin, also known as Brunette Coleman. It analyzes Larkin's motives in his imitation of the narcissistic feminine voyeurism of writer Dorita Fairlie Bruce and the lesbian sadism and class prejudice of novelist Dorothy Vicary. It discusses his depiction of girls or young women with empathy as agents in their own right, rather than as sexual objects such as in the poem "Sugar and Spice," his adoption of French motifs and French voice.
