Abstract

The Hypercontemporary Novel in Portugal: Fictional Aesthetics and Memory after Postmodernism, edited by Paulo de Medeiros and Ana Paula Arnaut, examines the evolving nature of Portuguese literature in response to twenty-first-century societal changes. The volume is divided into two parts: one exploring intermediality, intertextuality, and self-reflexivity in hypercontemporary novels, and the other focusing on themes of violence, memory, and post-memory. Through eleven essays, the book analyzes how contemporary Portuguese authors employ innovative narrative techniques and address issues such as identity, globalization, colonial legacies, and existential concerns. It highlights the genre’s fluidity and its engagement with both local and global narratives, contributing significantly to contemporary Portuguese literary criticism.
