Abstract
The article focuses on Gail Kern Paster's work on the corporeal and humoral nature of the human subject in early modernity and its importance in changing our understanding of personhood. Topics include the social shaping of bodily function to naturalize forms of patriarchal domination, the entanglement of bodily shame in William Shakespeare's work ,and shame as a kind of virtue that arises from reprehensible thoughts, words, and actions in the Poet's relationship.
