Abstract
This article focuses on a recording of compositions by Douglas Hedwig, a longtime Metropolitan Opera Orchestra trumpeter, showcasing his skill as a composer for brass instruments. The album features 11 works, including solo pieces for trumpet, flugelhorn, and trombone, as well as ensemble works performed by groups such as the Altus Trumpet Ensemble and Lagniappe Brass. Notable compositions include the etude-like trumpet solo "Obsidian," the vocal-piano-trumpet trio "New Worlds" commemorating the Apollo moon landing, and the five-movement brass quintet, organ, and percussion piece "A Certain Slant of Light." The musicians, many affiliated with the University of Louisiana at Monroe, deliver performances noted for their quality and expressiveness.
