Abstract

This article examines the predominance of kataphatic (focused on the revealed aspects of God) over apophatic (focused on the mysterious, ineffable aspects of God) approaches in Christian faith formation within Western higher education, particularly among emerging adults. Drawing on a 14-year case study at Corban University, a private evangelical Christian institution in Oregon, the research finds that most students exhibit kataphatic spiritual preferences, with apophatic orientations significantly underrepresented. The study highlights how increased reliance on digital technology and resultant digital distractions—exacerbated by shifts to online and hybrid learning during the COVID-19 pandemic—impede students’ engagement with apophatic spirituality, which requires contemplative attention and openness to mystery. The article concludes by recommending pedagogical strategies that integrate both kataphatic and apophatic approaches, including practices like Lectio Divina, reflective journaling, and disciplined prayer, to foster a more balanced and holistic spiritual formation that counters digital distraction and nurtures deeper encounters with the mystery of God.
