Abstract

This article examines gender identities and gender expressions in Ngugi wa Thiong'o's 2006 novel *Wizard of the Crow*, situating African identities within the historical contexts of slavery, colonialism, and neo-colonialism. Using post-structuralist feminist theory, which challenges universalizing notions of womanhood and supports male involvement in combating women's oppression, the study highlights Ngugi's shift from earlier portrayals of women as prostitutes to more complex female characters embodying political agency and feminist advances. The novel's characters, especially Nyawira, exemplify the fluidity and pluralism of gender roles, with women actively challenging patriarchal power structures and collaborating with men for societal transformation. The paper concludes that *Wizard of the Crow* reflects evolving gender dynamics in postcolonial Africa, emphasizing cooperation between genders and the reconfiguration of traditional identities amid political and economic challenges.
