Abstract
The poem "Bear in the Shadows" explores the emotional experience of the speaker as their father undergoes a third heart surgery. The imagery of a sow bear foraging near a swamp parallels the speaker’s reflections on their parents’ vulnerability and the looming presence of mortality. The bear symbolizes a persistent, haunting awareness that accompanies the speaker during a solitary hike and in their ongoing visits and conversations about health and life. The poem conveys themes of care, anxiety, and the weight of familial responsibility through natural and domestic metaphors. [Extracted from the article]
