Abstract

The article focuses on the reopening of the Zeyrek Cinili Hamam, a historic Turkish bath in Istanbul, which took place in May 2024 after a lengthy restoration. Originally constructed in the early 1500s by the renowned Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan, the hamam was built atop a Byzantine-era cistern. The restoration revealed vibrant blue-and-white patterned tiles and other artifacts, which are now displayed in a new museum that also digitally reconstructs the bath's original design. The article highlights the blend of historical and contemporary elements, including modern designs by fashion designer Hussein Chalayan that reflect Ottoman bathing culture.
