Abstract
This article reviews a scholarly work focused on the Fourth Quest for the historical Jesus, emphasizing the role of the Gospel of John and the theme of purity in Jesus’ teachings. The author argues for greater inclusion of John as a valuable historical source, building on Paul Anderson’s efforts to counteract the marginalization of John’s Gospel in historical Jesus research. The book critically assesses previous scholarly phases, including the American Jesus Seminar and the Third Quest, and explores how purity is portrayed in John’s Gospel, particularly in chapters 1–11, before comparing these themes with purity-related narratives in the Synoptic Gospels. Challenges remain in interpreting the distinctive Johannine discourses as authentic words of Jesus, requiring nuanced scholarly engagement.
