Abstract

The article explores the constellation Virgo by connecting its classical symbolism of an autonomous, unmarried woman to figures such as the virgin goddesses Astraea, Artemis, and especially Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, strategic war, and crafts. Athena, whose name is linked to the Parthenon temple in Athens, embodies the qualities traditionally associated with Virgo, including strength, independence, and protection. The article also draws a parallel between Virgo and Queen Elizabeth I, known as the Virgin Queen, highlighting her role as a powerful, unmarried female ruler who claimed divine right. The brightest star in Virgo, Spica, symbolizes a sheaf of wheat held by the goddess, reinforcing Virgo’s association with fertility and agriculture. [Extracted from the article]
