Abstract

The article focuses on Jack London's transformation of exhausted nineteenth-century vineyard land in Sonoma Valley, California, into a model farm and ranch known as Beauty Ranch. London (1876–1916), a prominent American author and socialist, purchased 1,402 acres with the intent to restore depleted soils, implement scientific livestock breeding, and demonstrate sustainable land management practices. Collaborating with agronomist Luther Burbank and relying on his sister Eliza Shepard as ranch superintendent, London developed terraced fields, planted diverse orchards, introduced eucalyptus groves, and bred premium draft horses and livestock. After London's death, his wife Charmian London and Eliza Shepard continued to operate and preserve the ranch, which evolved into a guest ranch and later a state historic park, embodying London's vision of land restoration and agrarian ethics.
