Abstract

Sable Elyse Smith is an artist who explores the theme of imprisonment through her work. While she has not personally been incarcerated, she has spent a significant amount of time visiting her father in California prisons. This experience has influenced her interdisciplinary art, which challenges the concept of mass incarceration and the prison industrial complex. Smith's work has been showcased in prestigious venues such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Biennial, and the Venice Biennial. She is considered an important critic of the carceral state.
