Abstract

The article focuses on the discovery and scholarly examination of seven manuscript leaves containing a fragment of the Old French *Suite vulgate du Merlin* found in the Bristol Central Library. The study, published as *The Bristol "Merlin"*, offers a detailed codicological, palaeographical, and textual analysis that dates the fragment to circa 1250–1275 and situates it within a Francien or Franco-Picard context, likely belonging to family α of the text's tradition. It explores the fragment's provenance, suggesting possible origins linked to Oxford or Cambridge and its eventual acquisition by Tobias Matthew, Archbishop of York, or alternatively through a London bookseller, while refraining from definitive conclusions. The publication also provides a carefully edited edition and English translation of the fragment, emphasizing a holistic, interdisciplinary methodology that contributes significantly to medieval manuscript studies beyond Arthurian literature.
