Abstract

The article explores John Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost" through the complexity of the interplay between secular and Christian themes. It argues that while "Paradise Lost" is fundamentally rooted in Christian theology and narrative, it also engages with secular or humanistic concerns in profound manner. It notes that Milton's anti-Trinitarian account of key events in "Paradise Lost" seems closely to conform to the classic Christian doctrine of Atonement in all but a few minor details.
