Abstract

The article focuses on the differentiation of religious sermons among Christian churches in the U.S. to compete in the religious marketplace. An analysis of 24,479 sermon transcripts from 4,925 churches across six denominations revealed that most differentiation occurred between churches rather than denominations or counties. Key factors in this differentiation included the use of high-arousal positive emotions, traditional moral values, and varying endorsements of liberal versus conservative values. The findings provide insights into the cultural dynamics of religion in America, highlighting how churches tailor their messages to serve distinct niches. [Extracted from the article]
