Abstract

This text focuses on a modern English verse translation of the Middle English poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" by the anonymous Gawain Poet, rendered by John Ridland and published by Able Muse Press in 2016. The translation preserves the original's alliteration and complex structure while making the narrative accessible, vividly depicting King Arthur's court during a Christmas feast when a mysterious Green Knight arrives to propose a challenge. The Green Knight offers a game involving an exchange of blows with a battle-axe, which Sir Gawain accepts on behalf of King Arthur, setting the stage for a test of honor and courage. The poem combines elements of chivalry, supernatural wonder, and courtly tradition, emphasizing themes of bravery and the trials faced by knights.
