Abstract
Many secondary school teachers lack targeted professional development opportunities in linguistic knowledge, yet even incremental improvements in teachers' linguistic knowledge could potentially benefit students' literacy outcomes. This paper presents a scholarly argument for 'Linguistic Lenses', a framework that provides instructional tools to differentiate literacy instruction across diverse secondary classrooms. The work advances theoretical understanding of how four interconnected linguistic components - phonology, orthography, morphology and etymology - can be systematically integrated into word study approaches within the secondary curriculum. This framework addresses a gap in literacy pedagogy by offering subject-specialist teachers specific strategies with which to identify and respond to the varied literacy needs of secondary school learners, particularly during the secondary school transition (Years 5-9), where literacy achievement often declines. By positioning linguistic knowledge as accessible and relevant across disciplines, this work contributes to the ongoing dialogue on effective teaching strategies while providing practical, evidence-based approaches that can be immediately implemented. Ultimately, this framework seeks to empower all secondary school teachers with linguistic insights that can be readily integrated into their teaching, regardless of subject specialisation, thereby fostering improved reading comprehension, writing proficiency and overall academic success among secondary school students.
