Abstract
This article focuses on Helena Lumbreras's foundational filmmaking experience in Italy during the 1960s and its influence on her politically engaged cinema in Francoist Spain. Lumbreras studied at Rome's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (CSC), where exposure to Italian left-wing film movements and figures such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Cesare Zavattini shaped her ideological and artistic development. Her graduation film España (1964) marked her initial critique of the Franco regime, while her later work with the Colectivo de Cine de Clase reflected the militant, collective, and worker-centered film practices inspired by Italian extra-parliamentary leftist groups and Zavattini's Cinegiornali liberi (Free Newsreels). The article highlights Lumbreras's commitment to cinema as a tool for social transformation, emphasizing her rejection of party affiliation and her efforts to foster autonomous workers' film projects in Spain.
