Abstract

The article analyzes Chrétien de Troyes's Erec et Enide, arguing that the hero's recreantise—his neglect of arms and reputation—functions as a form of original sin, with his subsequent atonement allegorically echoing the Christian salvation narrative. Topics include the use of baptismal imagery and sacramental symbolism, the allegorical role of the white stag and heroine's white dress, and Erec as a Christ-like figure redeeming both himself and others.
