Abstract
In the article "Warring Genealogies: Race, Kinship, and the Korean War" by Joo Ok Kim, the author critiques the historiography of the Korean War, arguing that it is influenced by Cold War empiricism and white-supremacist ideologies. Kim examines how genealogy and kinship are used to promote racially exclusionary ideas of belonging within the national family, while disregarding more inclusive notions of kinship. Through an interdisciplinary approach, Kim analyzes cultural studies, feminist and queer critiques, and literary analysis to uncover the racial and kinship dynamics of the war. She also explores alternative kinship models presented in Chicano/a literature, challenging traditional narratives and broadening historical understandings of the conflict. Kim's work fills a scholarly gap regarding Latinos in the Korean War, enhances discussions on Asian-Latino kinship, and challenges dominant nationalist and racial discourses.
