Abstract
The Socialist Patriot: George Orwell and War, by Peter Stansky (Stanford University Press, 150 pp., $14) FEW writers have left a literary and intellectual legacy as hotly disputed as George Orwell's. Stansky's argument that Orwell remained committed to his vision of socialism to the end would be more persuasive if he set major works on both sides of the scale. Although Stansky downplays somewhat the snobbery and ostracism to which Blair was subjected in his two years at the school, that harsh experience informs one of Orwell's most celebrated essays, "Such, Such Were the Joys", as witty as it is harrowing.
