Abstract

This article examines *The Autobiography of Jane Eyre* (AoJE), a 2013–2014 transmedia adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's *Jane Eyre* by Nessa Aref and Alysson Hall, focusing on how the use of characters' social media accounts affects user interactivity and immersion. AoJE expands Brontë's original narrative into a modern, multi-platform storyworld that includes YouTube episodes and thirteen character-run social media feeds, encouraging users to engage actively as both consumers and producers ("prosumers") of content. However, the study argues that while these strategies initially enhance engagement, the visible paratextual elements—such as likes, comments, and follower counts—can undermine long-term immersion, especially as the social media activity ceases and users confront "old" content. The article situates AoJE within broader transmedia storytelling theory, highlighting tensions between immersive narrative experience and interactive participation, and underscores the challenges of sustaining user engagement across dispersed digital platforms over time.
