Abstract
This article examines the relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters and chronic pain (CP) in a sample of 663 Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) personnel and veterans seeking mental health treatment, focusing on whether anxiety and depression symptom severity mediate this relationship. Using self-report measures, the study found that anxiety and depression fully mediated the effects of PTSD symptom clusters avoidance, negative mood and cognitions, and arousal on pain, while intrusion symptoms had a direct effect on pain partially mediated by anxiety only. These findings highlight the importance of addressing anxiety and depression alongside PTSD and pain in clinical treatment for military populations with high psychiatric comorbidity. The study underscores the need for integrated treatment approaches and further research on comorbidities to improve outcomes for veterans and serving personnel.
