Abstract
In the article "Love is a Battlefield" by Jonathan Fennell, the author explores the significance of "Dear John" letters during times of war. These letters, in which a soldier's partner ends the relationship and often reveals that they have found someone new, had a profound impact on soldiers' morale. Susan Carruthers examines the discourse surrounding these letters and how they reflected the U.S. military's views on relationships and gender roles during World War II. The article also discusses the double standards regarding sexuality and the military's efforts to manage soldiers' relationships. Carruthers concludes by highlighting the need for a reevaluation of these views and the recognition of the complex factors that contribute to soldiers' mental health and well-being.
