Abstract
This article examines how Margaret Atwood has been a central figure in Canadian literary diplomacy over the past six decades, illustrating how the Canadian government leverages cultural and foreign policy instruments to internationalize Canadian literature and enhance Canada’s global image. It outlines three phases of Atwood’s career—introducing Canadian literature, interpreting Canada abroad, and positioning Canada in the world—and shows how her work supports six diplomatic objectives, including promoting Canadian values, reinforcing bilateral relations, expanding cultural exports, and fostering international Canadian studies. The article highlights Atwood’s significant role at international venues such as the Frankfurt Book Fair and within academic Canadian studies programs, particularly in Germany, as key platforms for advancing Canada’s soft power through literature. Ultimately, it argues that literary diplomacy, exemplified by Atwood’s global influence, is a vital and strategic form of cultural statecraft that shapes nuanced international perceptions of Canada’s identity, values, and role in addressing global challenges.
