Augustine's City of God: The Sovereign God and the Drama of History.

Abstract

The article focuses on Augustine's understanding of God's absolute sovereignty as it unfolds in history and the role of the Christian Church as the spiritual community bearing witness to this divine rule. Topics include the paradox of the "already/not-yet" fulfillment of God's kingdom, the dialectical relationship between human political authority and divine providence, and Augustine's political theology expressed in The City of God as a response to the collapse of the Roman Empire.
