Abstract

A project that originated from a Duke University undergraduate's honors thesis created a media stir last month over the lack of controls on the sale and use of individuals' sensitive mental health information. As of late February, around 60 media outlets had cited Joanne Kim's research findings, which were based on her direct contact with 10 data brokers that collect consumers' personal information and share it with, or sell it to, other entities.
