Abstract

The article focuses on the development and implementation of a national burn prevention program in Ukraine, targeting the high incidence of pediatric scald injuries. Utilizing a five-step initiative—data gathering, program design, implementation, outcome evaluation, and program maintenance—the program combined active education for caregivers and healthcare providers with a broad information campaign, leading to national policy changes mandating burn prevention education. Initial evaluations demonstrated a reduction in scald injuries and improved first-aid knowledge among daycare workers, though overall knowledge gains varied. The ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War has disrupted the program and healthcare infrastructure, prompting plans to reassess and adapt the prevention efforts when conditions permit. This model offers a culturally sensitive framework potentially adaptable to other low- and middle-income countries facing similar burn injury challenges.
