Abstract
The article focuses on the first season of *The Dream*, a 2018 investigative series examining multilevel marketing (MLM) companies such as Amway, LuLaRoe, and Mary Kay, which have faced accusations of operating like pyramid schemes. Despite denials from these companies and promotion of their top earners' success, studies indicate that 99% of MLM participants lose money. The series' host, journalist Jane Marie, explores how MLMs target women and stay-at-home mothers by using empowerment rhetoric and the gig economy appeal to recruit friends and family into selling products at social gatherings. The investigation highlights the personal impact of MLM involvement while maintaining a balanced and empathetic perspective.
