Abstract

The article explores the evolution of American Christmas light traditions and their cultural impact. Topics include the shift from German candle-lit trees to electric lights sparked by innovations from Thomas Edison and Edward Hibberd Johnson, the growth of outdoor light displays from the early 20th century through post–World War II suburban expansion, and the modern tension between dazzling holiday decorations and their significant energy consumption across millions of U.S. homes.
