Abstract

This article focuses on clarifying inaccuracies regarding UK broadcasting regulations on tobacco, alcohol, and high fat, salt, or sugar (HFSS) product content in reality TV programmes as presented in a previous study. The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, states that its Broadcasting Code does prohibit product placement and sponsorship of HFSS products in programmes aimed at children and restricts the promotion and prominence of such products regardless of commercial intent. Contrary to the earlier article's claims, references to tobacco and alcohol are not automatically prohibited in programmes viewed by young people but must be contextually justified, balancing editorial freedom and audience protection. Ofcom emphasizes that its rules consider the context and purpose of content, such as educational or historical programming, rather than imposing blanket bans.
